Nelen & Schuurmans selected to work on climate resilience plans in Antwerp

19 October 2021

OKRA landscape architects and Nelen & Schuurmans have been selected to work on climate-proof district development plans in Antwerp. The district development plans are bringing the overall climate policies a step further and will lead to new street-level designs.

Nelen & Schuurmans will contribute to this project by analyzing pluvial flood risk and heat stress, by using tools like 3Di for integral hydrodynamic modelling and the interactive heatstresstool. We are going to disclose this information in an online portal and translate our insights into design requirements.

Internationally renowned landscape architects from OKRA will take the design requirements in order to create streetscapes in which water and greenery play a strategic role. The project will run for two years and covers six districts of Antwerp. The project will commence with the Struisbeek district.

“We are very happy with this cooperation in which data-driven climate resiliency and landscape architecture meet. This project also highlights the importance of using analysis and interactive design tools combined with domain expertise in order to adapt to climate change. We expect to deliver a significant contribution to a healthy, safe and resilient environment for each of the Antwerp districts.” Olga Pleumeekers, Director Consultancy Services.
